Although their intent may not have been malicious, it was fairly bad timing and left many of the 49ers players upset.

They’re also making sure that they don’t repeat the last-play, heartbreaking losses that defined that 0-4 start. Better to put a game out of reach than to let it stay in reach of the fates in the final seconds, as they did each of their first two games and three of their first four. (Not to mention their last two losses, to the Patriots and Jaguars, before their blowout of the Bills.)

“It was worse [than a strain], but I’m not going to get into detail about that. At the end of the day, we’ve got the Hawks, they play us good and see how I feel [on Tuesday] and if I pass all the tests that [Cavs trainers] Geo [George Sibel] and Steve [Spiro] want me to go through in order to be good to play, then I will play, and if I don’t pass, then I have to do more studying.”

Beathard suffered a leg injury in the final minutes of the 49ers’ 24-13 loss to the Seahawks, but instead of the usual silence from the crowd when a player is down, fans saw Garoppolo warming up on the sideline and began to cheer.

“Our starting [QB] got hurt and people are cheering before he even stands up,” safety Eric Reid said, per Mercury News. “That pisses me off. I’m disappointed in our fans. I understand the excitement about Jimmy, he’s a great player, but that’s not right.”

Linebacker Reuben Foster echoed the same feeling, saying the fans were unfair to Beathard, who was able to get up and walk off the field, regardless of how excited the crowd was to see Garoppolo play.

“First of all, I wanted to say our fans are better than that,” linebacker Reuben Foster said. “You wait until a guy gets up to cheer, not when a guy’s down. Then when he’ s up, you cheer.mariners_760

Antetokounmpo scores 37 points, Bucks beat Jazz 117-100

The game was already well in hand for the Milwaukee Bucks, but a thunderous dunk by Giannis Antetokounmpo in the final minute provided an exclamation point on a successful stretch of three home games in four days.

Antetokounmpo finished with 37 points, 13 rebounds and seven assists and the Bucks beat the Utah Jazz 117-100 on Saturday night for their third consecutive victory.

Milwaukee is five games over .500 for the first time since Feb. 28, 2015, and is off to its best start through 25 games since also starting 15-10 in the 2005-06 season.

“As a team, we’re growing up and understanding what it takes to win in this league,” Bucks coach Jason Kidd said. “It’s not easy. The week didn’t start off well for us (with a loss to Boston) but we ended it on a positive note. Now we turn the page to another week with another three in four.”

The Bucks built a 22-point lead early in the fourth and held on after the Jazz pulled within single digits.

Antetokounmpo scored 24 points in the second half, drawing chants of “MVP! MVP!” from the home crowd on multiple occasions. Khris Middleton and Eric Bledsoe each added 20 points.

“Coming out of the half, we talked here in the meeting, we said we got to finish this game and not give them chances,” Antetokounmpo said. “So that was what I was trying to do, and that is why I came out playing hard.”

Milwaukee led by as many as 16 points in the second quarter before Utah went on a 19-5 run to pull to 44-42 on a pair of free throws by Ricky Rubio with 1:50 until halftime.

The kid is dressed up as a Charger dressed up as a Greek god.

Bortles took a verbal jab at Jefferson’s situation by calling it “a little Ron Artest” action, referring to the former NBA player who famously went into the crowd as part of a 2004 brawl that included fans and players.

“Going into the stands probably isn’t too smart,” Bortles said.

Doctors performed emergency vascular surgery that night to repair a damaged artery in Miller’s left leg that stemmed from the knee dislocation. Miller remained hospitalized in New Orleans for eight days before being transported back to Chicago in a medevac jet.

Brady joined Instagram toward the end of last season, so this season’s images have been popping up there in addition to Facebook. Things started out fairly normal: Here’s a TB Times cover that hit after the Patriots’ win against the Chargers. It’s Halloween-themed, with Brady in a vampire costume (because he’s ageless, get it?) pretending to be afraid of a kid. Or something like that.

“Look, we need to get you going. Everybody wants you here helping us out,” Spagnuolo said he told the young cornerback, whom the Giants had high hopes for entering this season.

“But this wasn’t the week to do it. He didn’t get enough reps during the week. But he did get some on Friday. I just didn’t think it was enough to have him ready to do the things we were going to do with the defensive game plan.

“He understood that. The goal there, after we shook hands and hugged, was to get him up and running next week.”

The Kings also went scoreless in the game’s first 3:15 and found themselves down 17-2 early. They average only 23.0 points in the first 12 minutes and have been held below 20 nine times in their 26 first quarters.canadiens_010_22b1189f1c421dac-140x140

The Browns’ choice to fire Brown came at time where there have been many questionable moves from the front office.

A botched trade of Bengals quarterback AJ McCarron and Brown’s decision to trade down rather than draft franchise quarterbacks Carson Wentz and Deshaun Watson left questions as to what would happen next with the front office.

The Dolphins and Broncos have been stuck in limbo thanks to unsteady quarterback situations that have sunk their 2017 seasons. Each has had to turn to emergency additions to shore up a position that’s been derailed by injury, incompetence, or both. For Miami, it meant luring Jay Cutler out of retirement to be the league’s 25th-most efficient passer. In Denver, it meant bringing Osweiler into the fold to complete the league’s tallest passing corps.

These stopgap measures haven’t worked. Through 11 games, the two teams sit in the NFL’s bottom third, their playoff hopes all but crushed. The winner will keep its fractured playoff hopes alive with duct tape and curse words. The loser will continue its trajectory to a top-10 pick.

Added the GM about Sutton’s catching ability otherwise: “(He) doesn’t body-catch; gets the ball out there and without breaking stride. Don’t see that in many college receivers coming out. Can’t tell you how many guys come into workouts, into rookie camps, and they body catch everything. He does well getting open and he adjusts well with his body for balls behind him and difficult to catch. His hands are quick, I like that a lot. When he adjusts, he doesn’t alter his stride much. That accounts for his YAC.

“I think he’s raw. You can work on some of the technique. I think he won’t have as much space in the league; things are tighter. But he does some things well that translate.”mariners_776

That certainly wasn’t the case Monday night.

The Heat carried a 70-60 lead into the fourth quarter and kept up the pressure in the final period. Johnson scored five straight points to run the advantage out to 18, and the lead ballooned to 27 in the closing minute.

As potent as North Texas’ offense is under Littrell, Troy’s defense is just as dominant.

Troy enters the New Orleans Bowl ranked 11th in the country in scoring defense, allowing 17.5 points allowed per game. The Trojans are the only team in the country to not allow more than 25 points in a game this season.

The Trojans’ defense has 15 interceptions and 36 sacks. The unit ranks fifth nationally with an average of 8.4 tackles for loss per game.

All 0-4 records are not alike, as it turns out, and the Chargers are reminding the NFL of this more every week.

The Chargers were not, for example, the same 0-4 the Giants appear to be. Like the Chargers, they played Thursday night to save face, because their 0-4 turned into 0-5, then 2-8 as they headed to Washington (where they later fell to 2-9). Meanwhile, thanks to the 28-6 beating they handed to the Cowboys in AT&T Stadium, the 5-6 Chargers have a chance to end Sunday one game out of first place in the AFC West with five games left.

Savage took a hard hit from defensive end Elvis Dumervil in the Texans’ loss to the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday. While he was lying on the ground, his hands appeared to be shaking involuntarily, but he was allowed back in the game for one series after being evaluated for a concussion. O’Brien said after the first “quick check,” he told team trainer Geoff Kaplan he thought Savage needed to be evaluated again.royals_035

Jared Dudley’s 3 from the corner went off the side of the backboard at the buzzer.

Even though he was without a goal this season, Panthers coach Bob Boughner viewed Matheson as a valuable commodity to have on the ice during the five-minute, three-on-three OT session.

” He’s great in three-on-three, because he has such great speed and he moves his feet so well,” Boughner said

Mills and Aldridge scored 20 apiece for San Antonio in its fourth straight win and eighth in nine games. T.J. Warren scored 19 of his 24 points in the second half for the Suns, who fell to 0-2 since losing Devin Booker to a left adductor strain that is expected to sideline him two to three weeks.

“Took us 24 minutes to find a group that would play with the right energy,” Phoenix interim coach Jay Triano said. “I mean, we just seemed to be a step slow. You know, I was mixing guys in and out trying to look for offense, defense, anything that would give us some juice and finally got it in the second half.”

That game was against Arizona and Ellington joked the Cardinals just should have left him in Houston when they departed Sunday night.

“I had to pack, but, yeah, it would have been nice,” said Ellington, who was inactive for Sunday’s game. “But I’m here now.”

Three questions with Texans running back Andre Ellington:

“At the end of the day, things in the building and the competition will work itself out, and obviously Eli is at quarterback. Obviously, he’s been [my] only quarterback, and I’ve obviously supported him throughout. I just hate to see everyone bash another guy for a coach making a decision to put him in the game.”panthers_051

4 things that shifted the momentum for the Steelers’ 31-28 win over the Packers

The Bills benched Peterman and brought in Tyrod Taylor after Peterman threw the most picks any quarterback has thrown in one half in NFL history. The Chargers already had a 37-7 lead at that point, and the game was too far out of hand for Taylor to save it. The Chargers won 54-24.

The Chargers are just 4-6, but they looked like the best team in the AFC West on Sunday. They might actually be a threat in the playoff race if the defense keeps playing with this chip on its shoulder.

Marcus Peters chucks penalty flag into Jets stands in frustration and then leaves the game

While it initially appeared that Peters was ejected, he just walked off the field on his own. When he learned that he was not ejected, he came back onto the field with no socks:

While it’s not clear where his socks went, it appeared he might have tossed them into the stands, and was trying to retrieve them:

Not only did Peters make a fan happy, but he came back with no socks. This has been the most interesting development of this Sunday.

Neither team has a winning record, so you may scoff at the idea that the Cowboys or Chargers have a shot. But it’s desperation time for both. The winner may be able to put together a run.

Even at 4-6, the Chargers are just one game out of the second Wild Card spot in the AFC, behind the 5-5 Ravens and 5-5 Bills. Considering that: A) The Chargers already have a win over the Bills, and B) Neither the Ravens nor Bills are that good, Los Angeles has a real shot if it improves to 5-6.

Wentz is on the run deep in Eagles’ territory, and he’s about to be brought down by Seahawks defensive end Quinton Jefferson. But he keeps his feet just long enough to release the pass, which somehow makes its way exactly where it needs to be for Agholor to haul it in.

The Eagles were trailing the Seahawks 17-3 in the fourth quarter when Wentz hit Agholor on third-and-13 for a huge first down. He found Agholor with a 27-yard pass in the end zone three plays later.

Wentz does this all the time. He did it earlier this season against Washington, when he disappeared in a swarm of defenders and then suddenly reappeared and ran for a huge gain.dodgers_005

Seahawks vs. Cardinals: Score, results, highlights from Thursday night game in Arizona

The good news for the Seahawks: Their 22-16 win over the Cardinals on Thursday night improved their record to 6-3 and helped them keep pace with the NFC West-leading Rams.

The bad news for the Seahawks: Richard Sherman suffered what was feared to be a significant Achilles injury. The star cornerback was one of multiple Seattle players banged up Thursday night.

The first game Gordon is eligible will be Dec. 3 in Los Angeles against the Chargers. That makes Gordon able to play the final five games of the season.

The five games is significant. Had Gordon been reinstated for six, he could have gained an accrued season in the NFL and been a restricted free agent after the season. Because he will only play five games, the Browns will retain his rights through the 2018 season.

Gordon has two seasons played in the NFL — 2012 and 2013. He was suspended the first 10 games of 2014, and the final game by the team for missing a walk-through the day before the finale.

This is a hard one simply because there weren’t any great expectations because Cam Newton was coming off of surgery to repair a partially torn rotator cuff. Nobody knew for sure how the shoulder would respond and how long it would take the 2015 NFL MVP to reach his stride. Overall Newton’s statistics aren’t great — 14 touchdown passes and 11 interceptions.

But consider he played most of the first 10 games without Pro Bowl center Ryan Kalil and Pro Bowl tight end Greg Olsen, consider the Panthers traded No. 1 receiver Kelvin Benjamin to Buffalo three weeks ago, consider Newton was limited in practice most of the preseason and the first three games (and he’s still limited to a degree weekly), and you could argue Newton has exceeded expectations. He’s definitely trending upward with four touchdown passes and no interceptions in his last outing. — David Newtonnike_bears-530

NFL owners believe anthem policy will change if protests continue, report says

As the NFL players’ protests during the national anthem continue to be a controversial issue well into the 2017 season, some team owners believe there will be a change to the league’s anthem policy during the offseason.

The protests began last season when Colin Kaepernick refused to stand for the national anthem to protest racial inequality. The protests carried into this season with more players following Kaepernick’s lead, raising the attention of President Donald Trump and NFL sponsor Papa John’s and fueling a firestorm among fans.

The Washington Post reached out to the NFL, but the league declined to comment on the matter.

In a letter sent to Jones’ attorney, David Boies, a group of team owners expressed their frustration with the Cowboys owner and accused him of “conduct detrimental to the league’s best interests” in regard to his attempt to block commissioner Roger Goodell’s contract extension.

The letter, first reported by The New York Times and Wall Street Journal on Wednesday and later obtained by multiple media outlets, also accused Jones of publicizing “outdated” information about the discussions in an effort to slow the agreement on a new deal.

Jones was given a cease-and-desist order by a half-dozen members of the owners’ Compensation Committee after a committee conference call Monday that threatened fines, suspension and docking Cowboys draft picks as punishment for his interference.

The warning is perceived as NFL owners firing back at Jones after he threatened to sue the NFL and individual owners over the contract extension and negotiations in which he claims the committee has misled to the rest of the owners.
